WTHI: Concrete Parts of I-70 Overpass Falling onto U.S. 41 in Terre Haute

More than 19 deficient bridges in Vigo County, Indiana’s D+ rated infrastructure continues to crumble

INDIANAPOLIS – While Mike Pence and the GOP-controlled Statehouse are still mulling over an election year short-term strategy to address the state’s D+ rated infrastructure system, concrete parts of the I-70 overpass in Terre Haute are literally crumbling and falling onto U.S. 41 – putting the lives of everyday Hoosiers in jeopardy.

With more than 19 bridges in Vigo County labeled as structurally deficient, it’s time for a long-term strategy on this issue – not the short-term plans presented by Mike Pence and Statehouse Republicans. What’s worse, Pence’s plan was only presented following one of his worst public relations crises as governor.

“After jeopardizing our ‘Crossroads of America’ reputation and wasting $71 million on faulty asphalt, Governor Mike Pence has been doing literally anything possible in an election year to make it look like he’s concerned about Indiana’s crumbling infrastructure. The fact is, Gov. Pence has only provided the bare minimum needed for Indiana to keep its D+ grade while also ignoring 90% of the state’s roads,”said Drew Anderson, communications director. “Instead, Hoosiers are ready for a leader like John Gregg, who foresaw this crisis and advocated for the improvement of the state’s entire infrastructure system back in 2012. It’s time Indiana has a governor who’s willing to solve today’s problems for Hoosier families.”

Data provided by the Indiana Senate Democrats

Indiana Democrats have continued to hold Mike Pence and INDOT accountable for this mess. From calling for a complete open records request surrounding the I-65 northbound bridge closure tolaunching the #FixOurRoads social media campaign, Democrats know that enough is enough, and it’s time for an immediate investment into Indiana’s existing infrastructure. Simply put, Hoosiers are tired of Governor Pence’s late to the game strategy, and they know commonsense solutions are needed to solve today’s problems for the everyday Hoosier.
