ICYMI: Governor Holcomb will not “personalize” COVID-19 or the state’s COVID-19 response
Nearly 8,000 Hoosiers have died from COVID-19, making this personal for more than 8,000 families
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today released the following list of gaffes by Governor Eric Holcomb to show how lackadaisical he has become while responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, a virus which has killed more than 8,000 Hoosiers.
In Governor Holcomb’s own words: Indiana is “on fire”, but he doesn’t want to “personalize” the virus or the state’s approach toward getting the pandemic under control in Indiana. This is exactly why Indiana finds itself where it is today, being labeled as a “risky” state to visit while being ranked as one of the worst states in cases per capita.
It leaves folks wondering: Why isn’t the governor taking this pandemic personally? Is the governor even taking this pandemic seriously at all?
Below is a small sampling of statements that didn’t age well or were actual gaffes made by Governor Holcomb during this pandemic year:
Holcomb claimed Indiana was “remarkably prepared” for the COVID-19 pandemic
Holcomb: “We’re remarkably prepared and you’re seeing that play out right now in our coordination. Again, this is all about staying informed to the facts on the ground as they change and they will continue to change. We plan to, through the state department of health, continue to put out up to date information on a daily basis.” WTHR
Holcomb repeatedly claimed the state was using the “facts on the ground” to dictate how the state responded to COVID-19
Holcomb: “We’ll adjust to the facts on the ground in Indiana. We absolutely factor their guidance into the decisions we make. Our numbers will determine our executive orders in Indiana.” IndyStar
After Indiana consistently broke COVID-19 records this fall, Holcomb finally admitted COVID-19 is out of control, saying Indiana “is on fire”

Holcomb referred to his weekly press conferences as a TV “show”, as thousands of Hoosiers have died from COVID-19
“All of this is in a single attempt to try to bring down that crest and slow the spread. We’re not alone in this, as I’ve mentioned on this show multiple times…” – Gov. Holcomb
Holcomb delivered tone-deaf joke describing the responsibility of quarantining as serving a “sentence” — a reference to someone serving jail time
“Afternoon, Steve. Ooooh…what…what…what day of your sentence are you serving?” (chuckles to one self) – Gov. Holcomb
On the eve of the Christmas holiday, Governor Holcomb told Hoosiers that he’s not going to “personalize” COVID-19 nor the state’s response to the virus that’s killed thousands of Hoosiers
