INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization that advocates for the future of Indiana and its families, today commended Governor Eric Holcomb for calling on all Hoosiers to get a COVID-19 vaccine following the dramatic increase in cases across Indiana (due to the highly contagious Delta variant). Holcomb’s call to action comes as Indiana saw its positivity rate rise to 6.3-percent, with more than 1,000 positive cases for the first time since May 8. The impending new wave of the pandemic risks rolling Indiana and Hoosier families back from the hard-fought progress established by the American Rescue Plan – which delivered vaccines in arms at a blistering speed this spring.

Luckily, more than half of Hoosiers are vaccinated. But, now is the time for Indiana’s elected leaders to execute a prevent defense so that Hoosier families don’t return to the days before a vaccine was readily available for all. Indiana Democrats believe it begins by having all elected leaders get their vaccine shot – regardless of political ramifications. This includes U.S. Senator Mike Braun and U.S. Congressmen Jim Baird, Jim Banks, and Trey Hollingsworth — all who have yet to disclose their vaccination. Their oath to the U.S. Constitution and public service must outweigh personal opinions and partisanship during times of crisis, like the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There is absolutely no appetite to revert back to the days when Hoosiers were asked to skip out on holidays with loved ones or miss out on important community events, but yet again, Indiana finds itself at the same crossroads,” said Lauren Ganapini, executive director of the Indiana Democratic Party. “Governor Eric Holcomb made the right call yesterday, and it’s time for all elected leaders from both political parties to step up and demand that Hoosiers get their COVID-19 vaccine immediately. If not for yourself, get a COVID-19 vaccine for your family, for your community, and for your country.”

Here’s how Governor Holcomb’s remarks compare to the rest of his Indiana Republican Party:

Governor Eric Holcomb: “Obviously the Delta variant has taken hold…if this isn’t persuasive to get vaccinated I don’t what could be. This is not hard to understand. Vaccines work. Look at the numbers. Look at the cases. Look at the hospitalizations rates. Look at the deaths. It’s overwhelmingly the unvaccinated.”
