Due to COVID-19, we’ve made some changes to the 2020 Delegate Selection Plan. Read the addendum here.
Each Democratic State Party is tasked with writing a Delegate Selection Plan in order to guide the process of allocating and selecting delegates each presidential cycle.
Indiana’s framework to send delegates to the 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee was approved by a unanimous vote of the Indiana Democratic Party State Central Committee. Indiana’s plan was the first state to be declared in full compliance by the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee.
As a response to COVID-19, updates to our Delegate Selection Plan are being made and an amendment is pending with the DNC. If certified results to the delayed Indiana Primary date of June 2, 2020, are not available by June 12, 2020, we will not be able to determine our delegate allocations in time to elect our National Delegates. In such circumstances, we will apply for a waiver from the DNC. Check this page often for updates to our Delegate Selection Plan as they develop.
Indiana will send 109 individuals to the 2020 National Convention: 55 District-Level delegates, 18 At-Large delegates, 9 Party Leaders and Elected Officials (PLEO) delegates, 7 Automatic delegates. In addition, we will also send 7 At-Large Alternate delegates, 9 Standing Committee members, 3 Pages, and 1 Delegation Chair.
National Delegates must pledge support to one candidate when filling out their forms to become a delegate.
Work with your candidate’s campaign to boost their message in Indiana! You can help your candidate collect petitions to get on the ballot, volunteer to make calls or knock on doors, donate to your favorite candidate, or any other organizing activities. The more votes they receive in the primary, the more delegates they will be allotted!
A presidential candidate must receive at least 15% of the vote in each congressional district to be allotted any district-level delegates and 15% of the vote statewide to be allotted any at-large delegates
You can file to become a national delegate starting April 22, 2020, at 9 AM EST through May 29, 2020, 12 PM EST. The filing deadline for National Delegate ONLY has been extended to Friday, May 29, 2020 at NOON EDT.

All National Delegates will be voted for through an online balloting system from June 13 to June 17, 2020. Only state delegates to the Indiana Democratic State Convention will be able to vote! Spend the time leading up to the convention engaging with Democrats in your county, campaigning for yourself, and fundraising to help you get to convention.
State Delegates are either elected on the June 2, 2020 primary ballot, or by appointment after the primary by the county chair (if vacancies exist). Individuals may file to run for State Delegate by completing a CAN-37 form with their county clerk between January 8, 2020, and February 7, 2020 (noon).
There is no fee associated with becoming a National Delegate, there are just costs associated with travel and accommodations.
Head to Milwaukee for the convention to represent Indiana and experience the nomination of our next President!
Pursuant to Section IV B of the Indiana Delegate Selection Plan, Indiana will be selecting three (3) Temporary Standing Committee Members to serve on the Platform Committee prior to the selection of permanent standing committee members. Temporary Platform Committee Members will serve until permanent standing committee members are selected at the Indiana Democratic State Convention and are not guaranteed a spot on the Indiana delegation to National Convention. Temporary Committee Members are responsible for all expenses associated with the position.
Those interested in being considered for the position of Temporary Standing Committee member should fill out the form below and submit to [email protected] by March 1st, 2020 5 PM EST. Postmarks will not be accepted. The Indiana Democratic State Central Committee will review applications and vote on standing committee members at their meeting in Spring 2020.
