Anti-ESG Bill is Latest Example of INGOP’s Neverending Culture War

State Rep. Ed Delaney, 2.22.23: “Give people that opportunity, because I’m telling you: we are undercutting the public’s confidence in our plans and they ought to remove their money if they have that feeling.”

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Democratic Party, the organization advocating for the future of Indiana and its families and workers, criticized the Republican supermajority’s continued focus on culture wars rather than addressing the real needs of Hoosiers. The recent approval of the anti-ESG bill by the House Ways and Means committee with a new price tag of $5.5 million over the next decade is a prime example of this misplaced focus.

The anti-ESG bill, which seeks to prohibit state pension funds from investing in companies that prioritize environmental, social, and governance factors, is a direct attack on the values of many Hoosiers who care about responsible investing and the long-term sustainability of our state.

“The Indiana Republican Party continues to prioritize culture wars over the needs of Hoosiers. The ‘anti-ESG’ bill is just the latest example of their misplaced priorities,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl. “We should be figuring out how to put more money in Hoosier pensions, not less. Indiana Democrats are committed to working for the people of our state and improving our overall economy, and we call on the INGOP to join us in focusing on the issues that matter most to Hoosiers.”

At a time when Hoosiers are facing significant financial challenges, the INGOP should be working to support our communities and create opportunities for economic growth. This means investing in job creation, infrastructure improvements, and education, not playing politics with our state’s pension funds or schools.

The Indiana Democratic Party calls on the INGOP to refocus its efforts on the issues that matter most to Hoosiers. We must work together to build a brighter future for our state, and that means investing in our people and our communities. It is time for the INGOP to put aside its culture wars and work with Democrats to create a better Indiana for all Hoosiers.
