10/24/2010 - Secretary of State Finishes Reviewing Voter Fraud Allegations Against Charlie White (Indy Star)
By Carrie Ritchie -
Secretary of State Todd Rokita announced today that he has finished reviewing voter fraud allegations against Charlie White, a Republican who’s running to take Rokita’s place.
Rokita’s office didn’t make any recommendations on the matter because Hamilton County has appointed two special prosecutors to decide if charges should be filed, according to a statement Rokita’s office released this afternoon.
Rokita’s staff spent more than 100 hours on the investigation and sent the special prosecutors 265 pages of documents.
The secretary of state’s office doesn’t have the power to subpoena information, so it didn’t get non-public records or sworn statements from witnesses, according to the statement.
Earlier this month, Hamilton County appointed Republican John Dowd, a former Warren County prosecutor, and Democrat Daniel Sigler, a former Adams County prosecutor, to investigate the case.
The allegations surfaced after White resigned from his Town Council seat in late September because he had moved out of his district.
White admitted using his ex-wife’s address instead of his new address to vote in the May 4 primary.
If charges are pressed, White could face a Class D felony. A conviction could remove him from office if he wins the Nov. 2 election.
